Who doesn’t love a genre where not even the sky is the limit? Speculative Fiction promises the writer unlimited storytelling freedom - you can write longer, indulge in the pleasures of world building, and populate that world with creatures unbound by space, time, gender, and species.
Of course - as countless characters have learned - freedom comes at a cost. In truth, Speculative Fiction asks the writer to think outside the box and within the box at the same time. Just like any other writer, you’ll need believable character arcs and an internal logic to the plot if you want your book to sell. In this 2-hour class, award-winning novelist Kim Wright will share seven tips to help you make sure that your WIP isn’t just a cartoon, but instead a kick-ass novel with all the depth and nuance of literary fiction.
KIM WRIGHT turned to fiction ten+ years ago after a career in journalism. Since then she has published four novels: LOVE IN MID AIR (Grand Central), THE UNEXPECTED WALTZ, THE CANTERBURY SISTERS, and LOVE IN MID AIR (all Gallery). LOVE IN MID AIR was the 2018 winner of the Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction. Kim teaches at Charlotte Lit and offers developmental editing through her Story Doctor service (kimwright.org).
